A legendary cocktail

Now is not the time to think about what you don't have.

Think about what you can do with what you have.

Ernest Hemingway, The old Man and the Sea
The famous and celebrated Bodeguita del Medio has gone down in history for being the place where writer Ernest Hemingway used to drink his favorite mojito. It is no coincidence that his novel "The Old Man and the Sea" was written precisely in Cuba and if in the quote we have placed at the head of this post, the philosophy of the most famous Cuban cocktail is contained: getting the most out of what you has available without ever complaining about what we lack.
The invention of the mojito is traditionally attributed to the pirates of the Caribbean ... the real ones! In 1536 the corsairs in the service of Sir Francis Drake landed in Cuba with the intention of plundering the capital Havana, and it is precisely on the island that a sailor - if not the famous Admiral - thought it well to mix with the aguardiente ( the fire water ancestor of rum: if you have read Treasure Island by Stevenson you know what we're talking about!) lime juice, brown sugar and leaves of yerba buena, a Caribbean plant with a mint-like flavor.
If we consider that aguardiente was also used by sailors as a disinfectant, that lime is a remedy for scurvy and yerba buena an excellent anti-inflammatory, we find that - just like the gin and tonic we talked about in another series of posts - even the mojito was born from a mix of natural medicinal remedies and what you had on hand ... think about what you can do with what you have.

If you want to prepare a perfect mojito and make your guests feel like you are in a corner of Cuba, read on: you will find the recipe for a cocktail worthy of the most infamous bars in Havana! 😊
